Began as manager of Callan & Condon. In May, 1892, Richard Joyce purchased the business of Callan & Condon.
From: Newark Handsomely Illustrated 1894 Although Mr. R. Joyce has been established in business on his own account as a funeral director and embalmer but a very brief period of time, he has already earned a reputation for ability and reliable methods, which entitles him to prominent mention this review. Born to this city, Mr. Joyce has had a valuable experience in his chosen profession, and was formerly in charge, as manager, of the branch establishment of the undertaking firm of Callan & Condon. In May, 1892 he bought out his principals and the business has since been carried on by him with marked success. His office and warerooms are of ample dimensions, neatly fitted up and appointed, and located at 110 Bowery Street. A large stock of funeral supplies and requisites is always carried, including coffins, caskets, metallic caskets, trimmings, burial robes, feathers, etc., all of the best manufacture and obtained at first hand from the most reliable sources. Mr. Joyce undertakes full charge of remains from the moment of death to the last sad rites at the grave. He attends to all details, obtains burial permits, secures interment in any desired cemetery, furnishes hearses, coaches, flowers, etc. He is also an accomplished practical embalmer, and embalms remains according to the latest scientific methods. His charges are always moderate. Mr. Joyce is a member of the Essex and Morris Counties Undertaker's Association. He is also a member of the C. B. L. and of the St. Patrick's Alliance.
