F. Englehorn & Son

One of the many well-known undertaking houses doing business in this city is that of F. Englehorn & Son. The house was established some thirty-five years ago by John Englehorn, and since his death in 1893, the business has been continued by Mrs. F. Engelhorn and her son, Mr. Otto Fischer. The ware-rooms and office are located at 16 Hamburg Place, and are neatly fitted up with everything connected in the funeral furnishing line. Mr. Fischer was born in this city, being educated in the public schools of Newark, and graduated from the Massachusetts School of Embalming. He is a practical expert in embalming and has a thorough knowledge of every detail connected with the duties of a funeral director, from the moment of death to the last sad rites at the grave. Mr. Fischer is a worthy representative of the profession in which he is engaged and is noted for his courteous and liberal dealings with all who have business transactions with him.

Otto Fischer

Mr. Otto Fischer, who, in partnership with his mother, is carrying on the old undertaking business at No. 16 Hamburg Place, under the name of F. Engelhorn & Son, is a native of Newark, having been born in this city in 1867. The business, of which he is practically the head, was founded nearly forty years ago by his stepfather, the late Mr. John Engelhorn, who married the widow of Charles Christian Fisher, whose death occurred in 1876.

Aside from the time spent in acquiring an education in the public schools Mr. Otto Fischer was practically raised in the undertaking business and this training together with his natural fitness by reason of his careful and painstaking disposition, coupled with his kind and sympathetic nature, has placed him in the front rank of the most esteemed members of his profession in the city.

Having been raised in the neighborhood in which his establishment is located, his acquaintance with the majority of the families he is called to serve in time of their bereavement, places him in the position of knowing just what to say and do without the necessity of asking a great many questions. His tact and tenderness in handling the bodies of their loved ones, together with his skill in placing decorative offerings always has soothing effect on the emotions of a mourning family.

Mr. Fischer is no less skilled in the technical part of his work being quite expert in the art of embalming of which he acquired a knowledge by taking a course with the Massachusetts College of Embalming.

The estimation in which Otto Fischer is held not only by his neighbors but by the community at large, is shown by his election in the spring of 1900 to the office of Coroner of Essex County for the term of five years, this statement becomes somewhat valuable as a historical fact by reason of his holding the office during the opening year of the Twentieth Century.

He hold membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in which he was raised and is well known by his fellow members of the Masonic fraternity.
