92 viewsA 1915 photo of the construction of the Public Service Building. The large building all the way to the left is the Robert Treat Hotel. The facing of the side is different than what is there today. The Military Park Building won't be built for another 11 years. The low building directly to the left of the Public Service Building is the second American Insurance Building. The company moved to its Washington Street building in 1930. Immediately to the right of the PS Building is a theatre. Depending upon the month this photo was taken it was either called Proctor's Newark Theatre of the Park Place Theatre. In either case you can see that the Forsberg Players are performing there. The old Centre Market is still there are will function for another 8 years. You can see someone selling their goods at the entrance. The market is above a still operating Morris Canal which ran below the market and Broad Street until it resurfaced east of the market. Flanking the market is North & South Canal Streets.
